Symptoms, Causes, Treatments
The shoulder labrum is a ring of cartilage that lines and reinforces the ball socket joint of the shoulder. Ligaments are attached to the labrum and it contributes to the overall stability of the shoulder. When the labrum is torn, the shoulder can become partially or completely dislocated.
- Overuse - If you repeat an overhead motion you can cause strain on your labrum which can lead to tearing
- Injuries and Accidents - Trying to break your fall with your arm is a common reason for labrum tears as well as automobile accidents which can dislocate your shoulder.
- Wear and Tear - With the passage of time your labrum can start to wear down. Labrum tears in people 40 or older can be a common issue.
- A grinding sensation in your shoulder.
- Your shoulder may lock up.
- Intense pain and discomfort in your shoulder.
- A decreased range of motion and a loss of strength.
By using physical therapy we can prescribe exercises that strengthen and stabilize the muscles around the labrum. This will help to stabilize and decrease pain in the shoulder. Don't let this problem fester, if a torn labrum isn't treated in a timely manner it can cause the entire shoulder to freeze up.
