Symptoms, Causes, Treatments
Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person’s spinal axis has a distinct three-dimensional deviation from its normal position. Although it is a complex condition, on an X-ray, viewed from the rear, the spine of an individual with scoliosis can resemble an “S” or a “C” rather than a straight line. Scoliosis is typically a congenital condition, in that it is caused by abnormalities present at birth. However, it can also be caused by secondary conditions, such as physical trauma, or disease, such as cerebral palsy. Scoliosis is primarily detected during adolescence when major growth begins to happen in various parts of the body. Early symptoms include poor posture and neck or back pain at a young age. People having reached skeletal maturity are less likely to have a worsening case. Some severe cases can lead to diminishing lung capacity, putting pressure on the heart, and restricting physical activities. Traditional management of the condition varies depending on the age of detection and the severity of the case. Children and adolescents can treat scoliosis through medical bracing, rehabilitation, and surgery. Some adults are able to correct the condition with surgery, although this will include ongoing rehabilitation to assist with full recovery. Fortunately, scoliosis is a condition that can be effectively managed and does not often result in an increased mortality rate. If you or your child has scoliosis, contact Discover Optimal Healthcare. We have non-invasive procedures that can reduce or eliminate pain, straighten the spine, and help with increased stability and growth.
